Students Protest for Miller Hall
LOCATION: LOBBY NEAR EHPS DEPARTMENT OFFICE
Just days before students had to make a $25 housing deposit they read in the school newspaper, Th’ Cycle, that Miller Hall would be “phased out” of its role as a women’s dormitory. Rumors went around that Miller would be turned into a men’s dormitory. With many questions left unanswered, a group of protesters from Miller and Palmer picketed outside Thompson Hall on May 18, 1971.
After marching from Thompson Hall to the administration offices, students met with Dean Keenan and President Hammond. Although both the Dean and the President expressed their sympathy, neither of them gave “one damn answer.”
In the Spring of 1972, the building was repurposed as faculty offices and the female students went to Aubuchon Hall or “the new dorms.” Unbeknownst to the students, the college needed more faculty office spaces for accreditation. While the “Miller girls” settled into their new dormitory, the English and history teachers happily had at their hand-me-downs.
